Cellulose Features

Air / Vapor Barrier

Air infiltration is almost as important as R-value in the thermal performance of a building. Infiltration of unconditioned ambient air means that heating and cooling systems must expend more energy to compensate for the infiltration.

Pest Control

Cellulose insulation is treated with boric acid, which is an efficient pest hindrance. When insects absorb or come into contact with boric acid, it kills the creatures and they can not contaminate your insulation.

Sound Control

Cellulose insulation provides very effective sound control to minimize outside noises and between rooms (if the interior walls are insulated). Many people only focus on the energy savings that can be achieved with Cellulose insulation but overlook the benefits that come from improved sound insulation. If you have ever walked into a house that is not insulated you will immediately notice that noises from outside of the house are “louder” than in an insulated home.

Fire safety

Besides saving you money, Cellulose insulation also provides extremely effective fire protection capabilities. Tests conducted by Underwriters Laboratories Inc.® show that Cellulose insulation provides an effective 1 hour fire rating. This will slow the spread of a fire allowing you more time to escape any danger. This is because Cellulose is specially treated using Borate Compound Chemicals as a fire retardant in the manufacturing process to meet or exceed all fire safety requirements.

Mold Resistance

A frequent argument against using Cellulose insulation is the myth that it is more prone to mold than other insulation materials. This is simply not true. Backed by rigorous testing, Cellulose insulation meets all of the standards established by the ASTM C-739 for fungi resistance. In addition, Champion’s Cellulose insulation also meets the stringent Federal Specifications HH-I-515D for use in government structures.

Green Facts

Cellulose insulation is one of the greenest products in the world.
Made from a renewable natural resource which diverts waste from landfills, Cellulose insulation not only limits greenhouse gas emissions during manufacturing, but also prevents waste paper from releasing environmentally harmful gases as it decomposes.
If all the paper currently being put into landfills was converted to Cellulose insulation, it would save approximately 7,030,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year. That is the equivalent of taking all the cars off the road in New Mexico and Nevada each and every year.

Cellulose Summary

Cellulose takes less energy to make than any other insulation material. This is often referred to as “Embodied Energy” and calculates the total energy required to transport raw materials, manufacture and distribute the product. Fiberglass has up to 10 times more embodied energy than cellulose and foam products have even more.
Cellulose has the highest level of post-consumer recycled content in the industry – up to 85% recycled newspaper. Paper is the largest component of landfills and producing Cellulose insulation diverts waste from the landfills thus saving valuable space. Fiberglass has a maximum of 40% recycled content and foam products have 0%.
Cellulose insulation prevents the release of greenhouse gases (methane) as newspapers decompose in landfills.
Cellulose insulation can be locally produced. Using local recycling programs and independent recyclers and servicing communities close to home brings new meaning to the old slogan “Think Globally, Act Locally.”
